Chukwudi’s Early Life and Education

Chukwudi Iwuji  was born on October 15, 1975. He is one of five siblings born to diplomat parents who are from Nigeria. Futhurmore, later relocated to Ethiopia when Iwuji was ten years old and they joined the UN.

At the age of twelve, Iwuji Chukwudi was sent to an English boarding school. From 1987 until 1993, he went to Caterham School in Surrey. He was elected Head Boy, making him the first Black student to occupy that role in the school’s history. 

In 1997, he finished his economics undergraduate degree at Yale University. In 2000, he took part in the Professional Theatre Training Programme (PTTP) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He then made his way back to the UK.

Chukwudi Iwuji began performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2001. He performed as Claudius in Edward Hall’s productions of Julius Caesar and Hamlet in 2001. In 2002, he played Fenton in The Merry Wives of Windsor and Aufidius in Coriolanus. He replaced David Oyelowo as Henry VI, the protagonist of the trilogy, in the 2006 relaunch of This England: The Histories. The character is described by Iwuji as follows: “In Henry VI, the musicality is different: the thoughts are very structured.” The Olivier Award for Best Revival went to the performance.

In the Caribbean-themed 2013 co-production of Tarell Alvin McCraney’s Antony and Cleopatra, presented by the RSC and The Public Theatre in New York, Iwuji played the role of Enobarbus.

In 2014, he played Edgar in King Lear. In 2016, he played Hamlet for The Public’s Mobile Unit, characterizing the play as “this ugly, relentless beast that’s about to be unleashed.” 2018 saw him play Othello at the Delacorte Theatre for Shakespeare in the Park, costarring with Corey Stoll as Lago and Blanke in The Low Road at the Public.

Chukwudi Iwuji has worked with a variety of theaters. In 2002, he participated in the Peter Hall production of Bacchai by the Royal National Theatre. He played Julian in Thea Sharrock’s The Misanthrope, Booth in Playboy of the Western World’s Topdog/Underdog Christy at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, and a key cast member in The Vote at the Donmar Warehouse in 2015.

Chukwudi Iwuji, the newest villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is introduced in the recently released Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 movie. Many fans think he’s the most evil of them all. In the movie, Iwuji portrays the High Evolutionary, a threat to the Guardians who, according to some, is even more terrible than Thanos and Kang the Conqueror.
