Early Life

In Mississauga, Ontario, Ramakrishnan was born and raised. She was born to Tamil-Hindu parents from Sri Lanka who fled the country during the civil war and settled in Canada. Rather than being Sri Lankan, she describes herself as a Tamil Canadian. Meanwhile, She attended Meadowvale Secondary School after finishing her elementary education at Lisgar Middle School.

In her final year at Meadowvale, Ramakrishnan decided to pursue a career in acting. Less than a year later, she was cast in the Netflix adolescent romance series Never Have I Ever. To film the series in Los Angeles, she postponed her admittance to York University‘s theatrical department in Toronto. She had originally intended to enroll in the autumn after her high school graduation. She changed her human rights and equity studies degree and again postponed her acceptance in 2021.

Career 

As the lead character Devi Vishwakumar in the Netflix teen comedy streaming television series ‘Never Have I Ever’. The first role Ramakrishnan played made her stage debut. Mindy Kaling was selected out of 15,000 applicants for an open casting call for the program in 2019. Using her mother’s camera, Ramakrishnan recorded her audition film at a nearby library. Then she was requested to submit four more videos, had a screen test in Los Angeles, and was eventually offered the part. At the time of her casting, Ramakrishnan was only  17 years old and had no prior acting experience. She said in an interview that she was inspired to pursue acting as a child. ‘Never Have I Ever’ made its Netflix debut in April 2020. Devi Vishwakumar, an Indian-American Tamil high school girl, is mostly modeled after Mindy Kaling. Up till June 2023, four seasons of the show were shown. Variety referred to Ramakrishnan’s performance as a “breakout performance” and the series as receiving generally excellent reviews. Furthermore, she was nominated for two People’s Choice Awards, an MTV Movie & TV Award, a Canadian Screen Award, and an Independent Spirit Award. As of July 2020, 40 million households worldwide have watched the series, according to Netflix.

Turning Red

In the Disney+ series Turning Red, Ramakrishnan portrays Priya. In the series Turning Red, Mei, a 13-year-old girl, transforms into a massive red panda in response to stress or excitement. And Mei’s closest friend Priya is hilariously funny and has a deadpan sense of humor, besides all this marked Maitreyi’s debut as a voice actor. 

My Little Pony

The fifth iteration of the My Little Pony franchise was revealed to have Ramakrishnan as Zipp Storm‘s voice throughout the whole content schedule. Formerly known as Princess Zephyrina Storm, Zipp Storm is a Pegasus pony and a main character in the fifth generation of My Little Pony.

Early in April, the first project—a 2D animated short-form web series called My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale—debuted on YouTube. Next her Little Pony: Make Your Mark, a CGI-animated Netflix series, debuted in September after a May special of the same name. November 2023 saw the debut of the fourth season.

In addition, she appeared in the Netflix holiday special My Little Pony: Winter Wishday in November, which was connected to the Make Your Mark television series.
