In Mississauga, Ontario, Ramakrishnan was born and raised. She was born to Tamil-Hindu parents from Sri Lanka who fled the country during the civil war and settled in Canada. As the lead character Devi Vishwakumar in the Netflix teen comedy streaming television series ‘Never Have I Ever’. The first role Ramakrishnan played made her stage debut. Mindy Kaling was selected out of 15,000 applicants for an open casting call for the program in 2019. Using her mother’s camera, Ramakrishnan recorded her audition film at a nearby library. Then she was requested to submit four more videos, had a screen test in Los Angeles, and was eventually offered the part. At the time of her casting, Ramakrishnan was only 17 years old and had no prior acting experience. She said in an interview that she was inspired to pursue acting as a child.
