McBurney was born in Cambridge, England, on August 25, 1957. Charles McBurney, his father, was a Scottish-born American academic and archaeologist. Charles McBurney is his paternal great-grandfather who was an American surgeon.

Anne Francis Edmondstone, his mother, was an English, Scottish, and Irish-born British secretary. His parents met during World War II as distant cousins.  His elder brother is composer and writer Gerard McBurney.

He graduated in 1980 from Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he studied English literature. He moved to Paris and attended the Jacques Lecoq Institute to pursue theater training after his father’s death.
