Charles Matthew Hunnam was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, on April 10, 1980. His father, William (who died in 2013), sold scrap metal and left the family when Charlie was 2 years old. His mother, Jane, is a business owner and former ballet dancer.

He was raised by his 2 younger half-brothers, Christian and Oliver, and his older brother, William. At 12, Charlie moved to Melmerby, Cumbria, after his mom Jane remarried. In his teenage years, Hunnam played rugby and got into fights with his classmates. He began suffering from mysophobia or the fear of germs. Hunnam was diagnosed with dyslexia.

Charlie had to learn at home after being expelled from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School for fighting. So, he chose to study performing arts at Cumbria College of Art and Design rather than going to college. With a degree in film, he hoped to write and direct his movies in the future.
