Joely Richardson was born in Marylebone, London, into the theatrical Redgrave family. She is the granddaughter of actors Sir Michael Redgrave (1908–1985) and Rachel Kempson (1910–2003). She is the daughter of actress Vanessa Redgrave and director Tony Richardson (1928–1991).

When Joely was three years old, she made an appearance as an extra in her father’s 1968 production of The Charge of the Light Brigade. Richardson’s and her sister Natasha’s early education was in The independent St Paul’s Girls’ School in Hammersmith.

Richardson enrolled in the private Harry Hopman Tennis School in Tampa, Florida, at the age of 14. She finished her education at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London in 1985 after studying at Thacher School in Ojai, California, in 1983.
