He is best known for his coming-of-age film ‘Boyhood’ which captures the life of ‘Mason Evans Jr.’ from childhood to adolescence. His works often involve exploring themes of youth, time and existentialism. Richard was one of the early and most successful talents to emerge during the American independent film renaissance of the 1990s.

Early Life

Richard Linklater is the son of Diane Margaret who used to teach at Sam Houston State University. He moved to Houston at the age of 17 to join an elite high school baseball team. He then got a scholarship for baseball at Sam Houston State University which he dropped out to work on an oil rig. This is when he read novels.

After returning, he found his new found love towards cinema as he spent free time watching films in Houston. Later in 1983, he moved to Austin and started learning about filmmaking at a community college. He started to save his money, so he could buy a camera, projector and editing equipment. He then got involved in the local film scene and helped start the Austin Film Society in 1985.


Richard Linklater’s career began in 1988 with his debut feature film, “It’s Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books,” and then continued with the cult classic “Slacker” in 1990. Linklater got famous for “Dazed and Confused,” which captured the essence of youth culture in 1993.

In films such as “Waking Life” (2001) and “A Scanner Darkly” (2006), Linklater experimented with novel animation techniques in the mid-2000s. In 2003, he directed the comedy film ‘School of Rock’- a movie about a guitarist forming a fourth-graders band. He was nominated for the ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’ at the Academy Award for his films ‘Before Sunset’ and ‘Before Midnight’.

His best work ‘Boyhood’ was filmed for 12 years before making its premiere in 2014 and won multiple accolades as well as praise from critics. He also won the Golden Globes, Critic’s Choice Movie Awards for Best Picture and Best Director for the movie  “Boyhood”.
